November Recap

A few less than last month, but a lively crew nonetheless hit the streets Friday night to check out some galleries. There were a few stops of critical note. The Roger Lapelle gallery had been taken over by some phenomenal muti-media works and CCP's very own Barbara Spadaro's paintings were featured at Muse. Thanks to those who came and sported our new pins. Next time, perhaps we'll have some folks decked out in T-shirts!

Break out the winter booties and warm jackets. Next time, it's DECEMBER! :)

Also, keep an eye peeled for our poster contest. We have some rockin' prizes for the winner. In addition to his or her very own First Friday Flaneurs pin to grace your jacket, bookbag, or what have you, the winner will also take home a beautiful vase created by the Art Department's resident clay thrower Frank Gaydos. Pictures of the prize and prize guidelines to follow!

Ladies in Waiting

If this first friday is any indication of how the semester may go, I think we're all in for a good time. Many thanks to Monica and Sarah for walking the walk with us and to new comers Rebecca, Julie and Karl.

The threat of rain made us cut the gallery tour a little short but we did get to see a about half of what we normally check out. The highlight of the night was definitely Shopping Bag Guy:

Fuel was our first stop, as usual. Monica noted that much of the work up had been up at least some part of the summer. My guess is that they wanted to show everything one last time before new work goes up in October. Let's hope:

After Fuel and a few less than stellar smaller galleries, we looked around the Wexler. There were a few 3D/furniture pieces on the main floor made out of a framework of steamed oak that were really interesting with their beautiful lines and very fluid forms. There were a few paintings upstairs that I liked but again, all in all not too much that caught any of our eyes.

I figured I'd give this Flâneurs thing one more shot. This is my last year so I'm hoping we can make it a good one. I have absolutely no expectations for anyone to show up this Friday, seeing as it will only be the second day of classes.

'leading the charge'

Many thanks to Professor Hahn-Koenig for making this First Friday one of the largest groups we've had. And thanks to Steve Engley for taking this very...uh, semi-accurate picture at the beginning of the night. I supposed someone had to lead the group!

There was so much to see and I was quickly overwhelmed what with the live music and anti-scientology kids in V for Vendetta masks, I could barely see the art for the noise.

Tonight was pretty good. Chuck Close up close and personal. There was an amazing 30x40 portrait made with thumb prints. Pretty sweet. Megan Cox had a nice exhibit and we had a few surprise visits. Many, many thanks as always to Sarah and Monica for leading the charge, as well as to Brian for sacrificing his homework time to walk talk and gawk with us and to newcomer John for checking us out. Thanks to Jeff Reed for dragging some students downtown and lastly to Sean for stomping around Old City with us. See it wasn't so bad, was it?

The Institute of Contemporary Art is very pleased to present an evening of conversation between sculptor Richard Serra and curator Lynne Cooke, who collaborated on the recent exhibition "Forty Years," a retrospective of Serra's monumental sculptures at the Museum of Modern Art. Galleries We Visited - 9/7/07

This is one of my favorite galleries to visit. They've been showing a lot of cityscapes as I recall, which is something I'd rarely complain about. There's something about seeing a familiar place from an unfamiliar angle to make it seem other worldly and foreign but at the same time it makes you feel at home. Tim Conte's work does just that for me. Maybe it's the way he captured the hazy and humid light of summer that is just so 'Philadelphia in July' or maybe it's that it was just as stifling out this night as when he painted Abandoned Station. Either way, it has a closeness for me. It's familiar and not. Brain was happy to see Conte work in some of his favorite artists. Oh, yeah, and we ran into Chris there. Hmmm, funny he didn't come by Starbuck's before hand. Was he trying to avoid us?

QBix
QBix was surprisingly on the slow side this night. Maybe because they weren't running their usual Peroni beer sponsor or maybe people were put off all the flora and fauna from Paulette Bensignor. Brian hit the nail on the head when he said "so much work" after seeing all the brush strokes that made up the innumerable leaves in any given painting in the gallery that night. I second that. But beyond the technical feats, these paintings, while at first glance seem to be nothing more that something to hang over the couch at the doctor's office, are more than that. They get a little acid trippy. The sky tended to shift around on me and my eye drifted back into the landscape a bit. They pulled me in. If I were better versed in the subtleties of landscapes, or in art in general, maybe I would have seen or appreciated these paintings more. They were nice though.

Definitely the highlight at Pentimenti was Sarah Daube. I did like the miniatures under glass, but Sarah's work was quite striking and refreshing. I had toyed with the idea of doing a series of small works but the theme kept eluding me. Sarah, I think, is able to pull off a nice, cohesive piece. She cuts silhouettes out of what I assume was found paper, maps mostly and while most of the pieces could certainly work individually, to see them all lined up along that huge wall made them all seem so much more unique in their sameness, if that makes any sense, and you start to see how each one stands out from the other and why certain maps where cut into certain shapes. Singularly, they would have been merely cleaver. All together, they are smart and witty.

Brett Eberhardt

Artist House
It was nice to have a break from the hyper/photo/uber realist that Artist House had been showing for a while with Adam Vinson, however beautiful and technically spot on. I really liked the trio of lamps by Brett Eberhardt. While not super crisp and clean as Vinson's work, Eberhardt's paintings had a way of allowing me to relax into them and really see the damaged shade, and the intricate wallpaper patterns; I was able to really see them as a whole. There were a couple of other artists showing there that I liked as well. Kate Brochman's sculpture, while I had see these pieces before, still commanded my attention as well as Amber Lia-Kloppel's.

Joel Dugan

Lineage
Oh, Lineage, what can I say. It's the same old stuff month after month. That is, until I see these small pencil drawings by Joel Dugan. Why, if you have this touch, this ability to created such a fantastic scene, why eff it all up with varnish? I swear, virtually everything else in the gallery was flat and dead and varnished to hell. Brian supposed that there's some guy in a basement in California manufacturing this style and cranking it out for the SoCal art masses to use. I'm thinking he may be right. But every month, here I am, heading into this gallery hoping I won't see wall to wall sameness, but I do. Joel Dugan's pencil drawings were the exception this month.

Did anyone else check these galleries out? Any replies? See something you think we should have checked out? let us know.

The first official, yet somehow unofficial, start to another semester of First Friday outings is behind us and despite the small crowd and the warm weather, it was a nice night. First and foremost, I want to thank Monica for joining us once again, cheerful and enthusiastic as ever, as well as Brian, reppin' the NJ and I want to thank Frank Gaydos for stopping by Starbucks for a few minutes to chat. He gave us a few leads on galleries before heading back to the Clay Studio.

This guy had some of the best stuff out there last night (I'm so sorry I forgot to get your name!). Brian and I talked with him for a bit noting how his copy of Rembrandt was better than most of the work in Lineage. As we were stumbling home from Sugar Mom's, I noticed he sold a few pieces. I'm hoping he'll be back out there next month. There were one or two things that caught my eye.

"It's all about the block letters."

This is the fourth one of these guys I've seen. The others so far are 40th and Walnut West, 40th and Spruce West, 7th and Market North. This is the first red one I've seen. It's at 3rd and Arch East.

Next up, reviews of what I can remember.

Dang! I thought I was going to be the first to post.

I swear, you guys missed it. I mean, tonight had everything. Action, adventure, laughter, tears, and white knuckeled adreneline drenched art viewing, man! Tonight was good. Lots to see. It was chilly, but we had a nice group with us that kept growing as the night wore on and then suddenly, there were three (thanks for ditching us, guys. I can't blame them though.) We seemed to spend a good amount of time in each gallery and time got away from us a bit.

Highlights from the night: John Eckel at The Knapp Gallery. He seems very Picasso/Precisionist/Matisse-y. I liked it, but that's not saying a whole lot. There were some nice graffitti-inspired pieces at the gallery near the Knapp Gallery (my old mind is starting to slip). They had some real funky pieces as well as some pricey custom painted sneakers. It was both trashy and classy. I wish I had taken some notes or something because it really was a good night out and we saw a lot of interesting stuff. I'm sorry not all the regulars couldn't make it, but I'm glad to see some new faces out with us. Next time we'll have to play my favorite game.

It was a really nice turnout tonight! Thanks to Frau and Herr Hahn (Professor Hahn-Koenig's mom and dad!) who came along, as well as the other friends, significant others, and just generally interested people! The Artist House was fantastic, with a GREAT woodcut printmaker who almost made me spend $400 on one of his landscapes (I may still!)! Clay Studio was good, as usual; and I really enjoyed the work at the Wexler.

A chilly night, but well worth it for what I would consider one of the best First Fridays of the year (Yeah, I know it's only April!). I hope that next month is as inspiring as this one!

I second the thank you to those of you who met up with us in the freezing rain to check out our 1st First Friday of the semester. Despite the weather, it was an excellent excursion. There was an abundance of technically fantastic work on hand in galleries like The Artist House and The Clay Studio, and some intriguing work of Surrealist Pop art at Lineage. If I only had $20,000, and an open 13 foot wall in my house, I may have picked up a work or two!!
